Carl Douglas Sweet

Carl Douglas Sweet passed from this earth on September 23, 2026 after a brief illness.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Pauline Sweet; his wife, Gaynell Edward Sweet; his loving companion who he shared 38 years of happiness with prior to her passing in 2021, Joan Kearnes; brother, Herbert (Hub) Sweet; sisters, Irene (Rene) Church and Joyce Mullins; sisters-in-law, Marcella Sweet and Gertrude Sweet; brothers-in-law, Mack Church and Raymond Johnson; nephews, Roger Sweet and Rich Johnson; and niece, Brenda Sweet.

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother, James Sweet; sister, Virginia (Jen) Johnson; brother-in-law, Kenneth Mullins; and several nieces and nephews survive with special thanks to Wesley and Bekky.

Carl lived a full and active life and was fiercely independent despite his obstacles. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and will remain in our hearts. Carl was a wonderful son, husband, brother, and uncle.

He was a man of faith, who loved his family beyond everything. Carl made sure his parents had everything they needed making trips home to visit and seeing to all their needs. He was there for his mom when he lost his dad and visited every other weekend as long as she lived taking her to town to shop till she dropped.

Carl loved the outdoors, hunting, gardening, and was an avid race car fan, going to the track many times.

Carl had polio at age 15, walked on crutches most of his life but never let that stop him from doing what he wanted to do. Until 3 months ago he was independent taking care of himself and his home and driving to where he needed to go.

Carl graduated from Whitewood High School and went on to a rehabilitation school in Fisherville where he got his accounting degree. Polio did not stop him. He would climb the bus steps with braces on his legs, just like the other kids and ride the bus to school.

Carl was supervisor of accounting at Double Envelope for more than 30 years until retirement. He loved his job and would talk for hours about it and all his co-workers, especially Bob Keiffer his boss.

A funeral service will be held in the Mausoleum Chapel of Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Rd, Roanoke, VA 24019, on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 2:00 pm.
