Tommy Lee Harris

Tommy L. Harris, 73, of Bassett, Va. went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the Ancora Gibson Hospice Home in Reidsville, NC. after a long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was born in Martinsville, Va. on December 12, 1952, to the late Esmond G. Harris and Luetta McAlexander Harris.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Edgar Harris and James’s wife, Helen Martin Harris.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Donna; sisters, Shirley Goad (Ray), Margaret Lawson (Dean), Jean Shorter (George) and Jane Hawks (Larry); 8 nieces and nephews, Jane Marie Stevens, Karen Kendrick, Bradley Harris, Deana Parker, Leslie Shorter, Richard Shorter, Patrick Hawks, Brittany Hawks; special great niece, Charlotte Pearl Witt; 3 uncles, 3 aunts and numerous cousins.

He grew up in Stanleytown, Va. with his longtime friend, Dean Lawson, who eventually became his brother-in-law. He was a graduate of Bassett High School Class of 1971. Tommy was a car enthusiast who enjoyed being outdoors working in his yard. He also enjoyed old movies, western shows, Andy Griffin and the Three Stooges.

Tommy was a member of Valley Drive Baptist Church where he served as usher, deacon and church treasurer. He retired from VF Corporation with 35 years of service. He was a volunteer at Bassett Rescue Squad in the 1990s.

A funeral will be held at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at Valley Drive Baptist Church, Fieldale, Va. and will be officiated by Pastor Jared Austin and Reverend Bobby Rakes. Interment will follow in the Blackberry Baptist Church Cemetery, Bassett, Va. The family will receive family and friends for one hour prior to the service.

Pallbearers will be James Fulcher, Billy Corns, Randy Stone, Dwayne Adams, Robert Shumate, Toby Keffer and Andy Parker.

Tommy will be deeply missed and his memory will live on through his family, friends and all who knew him.

The family would like to thank Duke Pulmonary, Cone Pulmonary and Heart Care, Dr. Paul Eason, Lincare, friends from Mountain Lawn Care and Adams Landscaping for all of their care, support and acts of kindness shown to Tommy and his family during this difficult time.
