Ruth M. Jones

October 29, 1936 - September 24, 2026

Ruth M. Jones, 89, of Axton, Virginia went to be with our Lord on September 24, 2026, after a long illness.

Ms. Ruthie, as she was called by everyone, was born in Henry County on October 29, 1936, to the late Irene Koger Richardson Morrison and the late Elder Charlie Reed Morrison Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Marianne Stone of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her son, Alton J. (Buddy) Stone, Jr. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her husband and father of her children, Alton John Stone, Sr., her sisters, Nancy R. Guilliams Koger and Mabel Addaline Morrison, and her brothers, Paul Joseph Richardson, Sr. and Charlie Reed Morrison, Jr.

Her paternal grandparents were the late Joe Henry Morrison and the late Senora Ann Morrison. Her maternal grandparents were the late Ruth Stone Koger and the late King Koger.

She graduated from John D. Bassett High School class of 1955. In later years, she attended Patrick Henry Community College.

She was employed for many years as Credit Manager of the former Wickline Drugs in Collinsville, VA. She was also the store manager after the drug store was acquired by Rite Aid.

She also worked for many years at Patrick Henry National Bank(now Carter Bank), until her retirement in 1999.

She worked part-time in her retirement at Walmart in Martinsville, VA. She loved working at Walmart and happily assisting all of the people of the area with their needs. Her failing health forced her into her second retirement at age 82.

Ruth will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, joyful spirit, and love for others. Most of all, she had a deep faith and trust in God and leaves a lasting legacy for her family.

Ruth was past president of Credit Women of Martinsville and held other offices of the club as well. She was a past board of directors member for Playmakers Community theatre and enjoyed performing roles in several Playmakers Theatre productions.

Ruth was a devout Christian and enjoyed worshipping and fellowshipping with many churches in the area throughout her entire life. She loved the people at all of the churches and really enjoyed the “Praise and Worship” time spent with everyone over the years.

The visitation will be Thursday October 1 from 6-7 pm in the chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with funeral to follow at 7pm. All other services will be private.
