Mae Tyree Witt

Mae Tyree Witt, 102, of Roanoke, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewitt and Maggie Bell Tyree; her brothers, Melvin and Nelson Tyree; and her sisters, Margaret Wood, Nellie Pollack, Evelyn Perdue, and Edith Tyree.

Mae had a love for old movies and celebrity gossip long before social media made it a daily pastime. It was not unusual to find photographs of Rock Hudson and other old Hollywood stars displayed throughout her home, as though they were part of the family. She also had a great love for NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon, whose picture held a special place in her home as well.

Mae’s love of the things that brought her joy was just one of the many things that made her special. She leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will treasure them for years to come.

Those left to cherish Mae’s memory are her daughter, Paula Grubb; her grandchildren, Paula Greenway (Tim), Sherri Underwood, and Michael Grubb (Emily); five great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mae’s 102 years were filled with favorite movies, racing, and plenty of stories to tell. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
