Islea Riggs Duncan
Islea Ann Riggs Duncan passed away peacefully on September 28, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Mobridge, South Dakota, to Percy and Patricia Riggs, Islea carried a lifelong passion for learning, family, and nature.
After earning her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of South Dakota, Islea dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds. She served as an educator for both the Houston Independent School District and the Spring Branch Independent School District. In 2009, she moved from Houston, Texas, to Appomattox, Virginia, to be near her beloved daughter and grandchildren. A woman of faith, she was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
Islea was preceded in death by two of her children, Patrice Duncan and Chris Duncan.
Her memory will be cherished by her surviving children, Kae Kessler (Joe) and Brian Duncan (Shara); her grandchildren, Bradley Winter, Kaelyn Kessler, Kaedance Winter, and Lila Fisler Duncan; and her devoted labradoodle and constant companion, Sweets.
A private dedication will be held by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Appomattox County Animal Shelter c/o donations, 3074 Morning Star Rd, Appomattox, VA 24522. Alternatively, as anyone who knew Islea knows how deeply she cared for the natural world, consider planting a tree in her honor.
