Betty Hall Tisinger

December 23, 1931 - October 16, 2026

Dr. Betty Tisinger, 94, graduated to glory on October 16, 2026. She was a distinguished educator and lifelong advocate for art education in Virginia. Born in Logan County, West Virginia, the daughter of a coal miner, Betty attended Berea College in Kentucky and went on to earn her doctorate in education from Pennsylvania State University. She devoted her professional life to advancing art education, serving as Art Supervisor for Roanoke City Schools, where she was instrumental in expanding art instruction in elementary schools. During this time, she also hosted a weekly television program, You and Art, on WDBJ, sharing her love of art with the community. Betty later became a professor of art education at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was awarded the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus. She was a dedicated leader in the Virginia Art Education Association and, following her retirement from VCU, continued her work with the association, helping strengthen its statewide organization and advocating for the importance of art in every child's education. Her contributions helped shape art education for generations of Virginia students. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Betty will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, gentle spirit, and devotion to her family, as well as her great appreciation for pop-up books, which she affectionately called "little works of art." She is survived by her daughters, Jo Leigh McGonigal and Jessi Tisinger; son-in-law, Steve McGonigal; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her son, Bryan Tisinger; and her beloved partner, Richard Tisinger. A private family service was held in loving remembrance of Betty.
