Viola Barker Compton

Viola Barker Compton, 83, of Axton, Va. passed away Thursday, October 22, 2026. She was born in Martinsville, Va. July 25, 1943, to Oscar Thomas Barker and Elsie Clay Burnette.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Joseph Edward Compton, Sr.; son, Joseph “Joey” Edward Compton, Jr.; sisters, Anna Virginia Whitehead, Orena Barker, Kathleen Barker Kennette, Alice Virginia Hudson, Mattie Barker Moore; brothers, Oscar Boyd Barker, Grover William Barker, Harry Lee Barker, Robert Lee Barker and Leslie James Barker.

Viola is survived by her daughter Brenda Compton Escherich (Chris) and son, Curtis Wayne Barker; grandchildren, Herman J. Thornhill, Jr., Destiny Michelle Keith, Curtis Wayne Barker, Jr., David Barker, Amie Barker and Amanda Barker. She is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Viola was a homemaker all her life. She loved her family and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and she loved to sing. Earlier in life she loved to travel with her husband to the Cherokee Mountains and other places. She also enjoyed playing bingo, working crossword puzzles and working in her flowers.

She was of the Christian Faith.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, October 26, 2026, at McKee-Stone Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at McKee-Stone Funeral Home and will be officiated by Pastor Carl Keith. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
