Terry James Matherly
Terry James Matherly
Beloved husband, father, grandpa, also known as “Paw Paw”, and someone that wasn’t a stranger to anyone he met. Terry went to be with his Lord and savior at the age of 82 years young Sunday morning November 1, 2026.
Terry was born June 4, 1944, to his parents, Martha Lucille Carter Matherly and James Paul Matherly.
Mr. Matherly spent his life in Danville, where he met the love of his life, Nancy L. Taylor (may she rest in peace) and was married on December 21, 1963. He and Nancy raised two children with putting God first, prayers and lots of love.
Terry was involved for many years in the Gideon ministry and prison ministry along with his wife Nancy. Together they helped raise funds and hand out bibles to anyone willing to accept one. Terry believed with all his heart in God, and his life reflected his faith. He was always a kind word, the person to go to for advice, or someone to just talk to if you needed a friend.
Terry spent many years working in Dan River Mills as a loom fixer. His passion for working on things no matter what it was, a car, a tractor, a broken heart, or just putting a band-aid on a “boo boo” which he was best at doing.
Mr. Matherly is survived by a daughter, Terry L. Morris and son, Gary D. Matherly along with his wife Cynthia A. Craig Matherly, whom he loved like his own daughter. Also, among survivors, are eight grandchildren, Taylor (Dominec), Ashley (Ethan), Bryan, Christina, Hannah, Samuel (Kayla), Rachel (Brennan), and Emily; along with nine great-grandchildren, Mia, Reuben, Maverick, Shepherd, Colton, Jayden, Scarlett, Thompson, and Virginia.
The family asks that you honor his memory by putting God first and treating your friends and neighbors like they were your family.
