Jerome Darnell Cook Sr.

July 14, 1942 - November 2, 2026

Our hero, Jerome D. Cook, Sr. 84, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2026, after spending weeks surrounded by his family and friends.

Born in Danville VA on July 14, 1942, he was the son of the late Charles Edward Cook, Sr. and Flossie Darnell Cook.

On March 6, 1965, he married the love of his life, Barbara Thompson Cook, who survives.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his sons, Jerome D. Cook, Jr. (Kim) and N. Todd Cook (Amanda). His beloved grandchildren, Chelsey Cook Mills (Tyler), Dylan J. Cook (Kelsey), and Hanna M. Cook. His great grandchildren who he adored, Tinsley Q. Mills, Maverick R. Cook, Charley L. Mills and baby girl on the way, Josie D. Cook. He is also survived by his brother Norman Cook (Elaine), sisters-in-law Claudette Cook, Faye Dyer, Myrtle Jean Thompson, Brenda Smith, and Bonnie Thompson, brother-in-law J. C. Thompson (Gwen) and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Charles E. Cook, Jr. and Rodger E. Cook.

Jerome owned and operated his family’s business, Friedman Fixture Co. and worked alongside his dad, wife, and sons from the age of 14 years old. He was a member of Grace Design Community Church.

Jerome was a gentle giant of a man, a wonderful and caring dad, papa, and “big papa”, who lived simply and loved big. He was a well-respected man, and to his family, he was our rock and greatest cheerleader. He always offered great advice and his warmth, gentle humor, and steady guidance left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Perfectly stated by Mt. Hermon Fire and Rescue, “for more than 64+ years, Jerome dedicated his life to the fire service, answering calls, sacrificing time with loved ones, serving his community, and making a difference in countless lives. His service was never measured by a title or position, but by the lives he touched, the people he helped, and the legacy he leaves behind. There are simply no words that could even capture what he has meant to this department and this community.”

Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Jerome is whole and healed and through our faith, we rely on the promise that we will see him again one day.

“His steady hand, generous heart, and quiet love built the foundation of our lives. He is gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.”

A celebration of Jerome’s life will be held on Friday November 6, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Norris Funeral Services on 41. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 5 from 5:00-6:30 at Norris Funeral Services 41 and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Mt. Hermon Fire and Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540 or Grace Design Community Church, 1064 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA 24540.
