Robert Harrington Lynde, M.D.
Robert Harrington Lynde, M.D., a retired neurologist, died at his home in Jacksonville, Florida on August 17, 2021. His parents were Walter Leland Lynde and Ethel Frances Harrington Lynde. He was born on January 3, 1938, in Takoma Park, Maryland. He graduated from Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, Virginia (Bachelor of Science) and the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 1964. He completed an internship at St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital followed by a three-year residency in neurology at MCV. He published several academic papers during his career. He practiced in San Antonio, Texas (Lackland Air Force Base); Jacksonville, Florida; Tampa, Florida; New Port Richey, Florida; and Thomasville, Georgia.
While in college, he met Juanita Anne (“Nita”) St. John, a nursing student at Johnston-Willis Hospital. He was smart enough to marry this talented and lovely woman. They were married for the greater part of sixty years. Dr. Lynde enjoyed genealogy, history, travel, architecture, antiques, early jazz, old country music and people who could make him laugh. He loved medicine, and especially enjoyed teaching neurology. He was a talented researcher, draftsman, artist, and builder. He and Nita spent many happy years refurbishing their homes in Florida and Georgia. Throughout his life, he was a quiet contributor to scores of charitable organizations. Dr. Lynde spent the greatest part of his pre- and post-retirement years taking care of family members. He never ceded a task of care to anyone. We who love him include this fact in this obituary, fully knowing that he would frown if he were here to read it. He was an intensely private man.
Dr. Lynde was predeceased by his wife; his parents; his brother (Dr. James L. Lynde) and in-laws (Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morris; Mr. and Mrs. Edward Herwig; Mr. Thomas St. John; Mrs. Horace Edward St. John). Dr. Lynde is survived by his daughter, Pamela St. John Lynde Cordon (Andrew); a sister-in-law (Mrs. James L. Lynde); a brother-in-law (Horace Edward St. John); cousins Mary Jo Harrington Taylor (Bruce), Richard Harrington (Sue) and William Groves; and many nieces and nephews. During the last few years, Leslie Lynde Dicioccio, in particular, kept him apprised of events in the extended Lynde family.
A graveside service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, 2021, 10:00 a.m., at Midway Baptist Church, 2595 Midway Road, Phenix, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to your local community hospice.
