Paul Frances Wiley
Paul F. Wiley, 79, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 2, 2021, from Brookdale Assisted Living, in Salem.
He was born on April 22, 1942, in Salem, son of the late Garland Francis and Lillian Epperly Wiley. Paul led by great example through every aspect of his life. As a student at Andrew Lewis High, he managed to balance his academics, social life, and sports. With everything he pursued, he set his mind to achieve his goals. At Andrew Lewis, it was football and track, throwing the discus and shot put, while maintaining his grades. As a student at Virginia Tech and a member of Kappa Phi Fraternity, Paul earned his bachelor’s degree in Engineering, thus paving the way to a career that he loved. As a master builder, both commercial and residential, Paul owned and operated Wiley Construction until retiring. Paul did not compromise when it came to building quality construction. He could spot the smallest defect that most would never recognize. His attention to detail was certainly something special. His wealth of knowledge and expertise was extended to serve the Salem community, as he also served on the Salem Board of Equalization.
When not working, you may have found Paul fishing at Smith Mountain Lake, or occasionally at the beach. You may have even seen him at Cave Spring Baptist Church where he always found his way to assist in various areas where help was needed, including an occasional mission trip. Paul was an active supporter for numerous years with “Answering the Call,” a group that was faithful in support of mission work in areas abroad, helping others, and spreading the Gospel of Christ. Locally, he faithfully supported the Roanoke Rescue Mission, which he'd served since the age of five. His love for God and for people certainly was exemplified in his generosity and love for his neighbor.
Paul was very quick witted and loved to make others laugh or to tell a good story. His talent and love for singing led to many requests at weddings and funerals over the years. Above it all, however, Paul will be remembered for his love of family, his generous and humble heart, and his Christian witness, as he truly exemplified a Christ like nature in everything he did.
Just as the apostle Paul wrote in II Timothy, Chapter 4, he has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, and has kept the faith. From now on, there is laid up for him the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to him on that day—and not only to him, but to all who crave His appearing.
Family remaining to cherish Paul’s memory includes his wife of 24 years, Darlene C. Wiley; daughter, Robin Wiley (Sunny); and his favorite furry friend, “Molly,” the cat.
A graveside service to honor Paul’s life will be conducted on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem.
