Richard Barry Phlegar

October 6, 1941 - August 16, 2022

Richard Barry Phlegar, 80, of Salem, VA, passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. Born in Salem, Via to the late Ballard T. and Ruby McDaniel Phlegar, he is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Wanda Price Phlegar; daughter, Lisa Cain and husband, Gregory; sons, Richard Gregory Phlegar, Alan Christopher Phlegar and wife, Adrianne; grandchildren, Matthew, Meagan and fiancé, Kevin, Emma, Hunter, Augustus, and Evelyn; sister, Montra Phlegar Clements and husband, John, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Barry was always busy; however, much of his free time was spent with his family. He enjoyed building cars and was a proud member of the Star City Hotrods. Barry was also an avid hunter, marksman, and gunsmith. As a member of both the Big Lick Long Rifles and The Muzzleloader Rifle Association, he earned much recognition achieving national records for marksmanship in the following categories: Long-range Black powder Rifle, 30 Shot matchcourse, 200 yards, four-member team, September 4, 1996, NRA National Record. Black powder Target Rifle, 30 Shot matchcourse, 300 Yards, four-member team, August 28, 2000, NRA National Record. Black powder Target Rifle, 30 Shot matchcourse, 200 Yards, four-member team, January 27, 1998, NRA National Record. Black powder Target Rifle, 60 Shot Three Position Regional Course, 200 Yard, four-member team, January 27, 1998, NRA National Record.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2022, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, in Salem, with Pastor Betty David officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until the service hour at the funeral home.
