Constance Muir Anderson
Constance Muir Anderson, age 93, died Sunday, Aug. 6 at Kings Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville, VA. Connie was born Feb. 13, 1930, in Grand Rapids, MI to the late Kenneth D. Muir and Marguerite R. Muir; She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter C. Anderson, Jr.; and her sister, Phyllis M. Manley.
Connie was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville for nearly 60 years. She served her church and community in a variety of capacities including choir member, prayer shawl volunteer, Bookmobile driver, Red Cross blood drive volunteer, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts leader and school librarian.
Connie attended Grinnell College in Iowa. She and Walt were married in 1953, first residing in Lancaster, PA and moving to Thomasville, NC before settling in Martinsville in 1962. She devoted her time to her family, always preparing a dinner at home at 6 o'clock every evening. She enjoyed athletic pursuits in her younger years, whether ice skating, riding horses or playing tennis.
Mostly, however, Connie was known for her infectious, sunny personality and her outgoing way of greeting everyone with a smile and a hello every day. Connie was a prodigious letter-writer, communicating with friends and family by using pen, paper and greeting cards. Connie and Walt welcomed their friends on social occasions in their home, hosting men and women of high character who had a positive and lasting impact on the Anderson children.
Connie is survived by brothers, Dr. Richard K. Muir (Peggy) of San Marcos, CA, and James M. Muir (Janet) of Farmington Hills, MI; son, Robert Anderson (Pennie) of Roanoke; daughter Susan Landis (Rebecca Eberhardt) of Black Mountain, NC; grandchildren, Elspeth Landis (James Schwentker) of Durham, NC; Sarah Landis (Don Boyd) of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and William A. Landis of Chapel Hill, N.C.; step-grandson Donovan Duff; great-granddaughter Alice E. Eagen and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service is scheduled Friday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Martinsville with Rev. Bea Miller and Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to the Alzheimer's Association, the Salvation Army of Martinsville and Mountain Valley Hospice.
The family wishes to thank the staff at King's Grant Retirement Community, especially the Memory Care wing, and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice for their care and compassion.
