Joan Douglas Motley Powell
Joan Douglas Motley Powell, 80, of Dry Bridge Road, Chatham Virginia passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023. She was born on April 7, 1943 and was the daughter of the late Clifton Douglas Motley and Ola McDowell Motley. She was also predeceased by a sister, Yvonne Earles and husband, Edgar, of Defuniak Springs, Florida. Joan lived her entire life in Chatham.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clyde Smith (Smitty) Powell, Jr of their residence. Also surviving are her son, Douglas Powell and his wife, Agnes, her daughter, Tondea Philpott, and her husband Randall, her grandson, Kevin Powell and his wife, Crystal, step grandchildren, Brian Philpott (Megan) and Megin Philpott, her great grandchildren, Caden and Harper Powell, step great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Greyson Philpott, her nieces Tammy Earles and Trecia Meadows (James) of Florida and nephew, Tim Earles (Sarah) of Texas, her great nephews Tyler Meadows (Jessica), Ryan Meadows, and great niece, Katie Earles, as well as her sisters-in-law, Gayle Taylor and Jeanette Pressley.
Joan had numerous cousins that meant a lot to her, and she always kept in touch with them, even if they lived away.
She was a loving wife and mother, and she always took care of her children and put them first. She was very proud of all they have accomplished.
Joan spent many hours sending cards which would always include a message to family, friends, or neighbors who might need words of love and encouragement. She enjoyed her flowers and collecting angels.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Stephanie Crumpton NP and Dr. Akinleye, with Sovah Danville and to Colleen Greene PA at UVA. Many thanks, also, to the staff at Roman Eagle Nursing Home, Danville, Va.
She was a lifelong member of Sheva Church of Christ. A funeral service will be held at her church on Friday August 25, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Voss officiating. A visitation will precede the service from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.
