Hugh Thomas Mitchell

Hugh Thomas Mitchell, Jr., age 71, of Chatham, VA passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg, VA. Mr. Mitchell was born April 7, 1952 in Pittsylvania County to the late Hugh Thomas Mitchell and the late Myrtle Frances Amos Mitchell. He was married to Sandra Sellers Mitchell, who survives, of the residence.

Mr. Mitchell attended the Jesus Gathering on White Oak Mountain. He worked for 25 years for Manning, Perkinson and Floyd Accountants. He later served as President of Quality Development Co., Inc, for 20 years, as they conducted business as Virginia Homes. He was also the co-owner of Elbridge G. Coles Insurance Agency for about three years. Mr. Mitchell graduated from Danville Community College and Phillips Business College and served in the Virginia Army National Guard during the Vietnam War. Hugh was most happy when he was on his farm, riding his John Deere or Ford tractors, tending the fields and caring for his prized Black Angus cattle. He loved farming and the cattle, which always brought a smile to his face.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is also survived by a son, Thomas Scott Mitchell of Chatham, and brothers, George Leon Mitchell (Treva) of Chatham and Roger Lee Mitchell of Boydton, VA. He is also survived by brother-in-law John Richard Inge and sister-in-law Christine E. Mitchell, both of Chatham. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and a host of extended relatives.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth M. Inge and brother Godfrey Thomas Mitchell.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 8, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Chatham Chapel, officiated by Pastors Ron Voss and Mark Redd. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Chatham. A visitation of friends will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m., also at Norris Funeral Services
