George Turner
George Thomas “Tommy” Turner died peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024, at home with his loving family. Tommy joined his heavenly family seven days prior to his 57th wedding anniversary.
Tommy was a gentle soul and bright light who lit up the lives of his family and his community. He was a most beloved husband and father.
Tommy was born in Martinsville to Lancaster and Kathleen Turner. He transferred to Fieldale High School his junior year, where he met Melanie Daniel, the love of his life. Tommy and Melanie both pursued college in the Roanoke area and married on August 26, 1967.
The couple settled and raised their daughters, Jennifer and Julie, in Collinsville. He took great joy in the adventures he shared with Melanie and his daughters—both locally and abroad. Tommy worked for DuPont and Melanie taught for Henry County Schools. Tommy was a beloved member of Fieldale United Methodist Church where he and Melanie attended regularly. Tommy was a member of the United Methodist Men and volunteered in other capacities within the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias. After retirement, Tommy volunteered with Grace Network in Martinsville.
Tommy had such an easy-going spirit and could bring warmth and a smile to all of those around him. He enjoyed cars, boats, and trains. Tommy also loved music. He was captain of the drum line in high school and continued his music, performing in different bands over the years. It was very common for Tommy to run into friendly faces in the community.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife Melanie, brother Fred Turner, sister Katie Turner, daughters Jennifer Turner Long (Kevin), Julie Turner (Tim Smith), and granddaughter Olivia Long.
Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, from 12:00 - 2:00pm at Fieldale United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow at the church at 2:00pm. There will be a private burial following the service.
Memorial gifts may be directed to Fieldale United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Fieldale VA 24089.
