John Max Powers
John Max Powers, 91, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on August 22, 2024.
Born on February 26, 1933, in Lynchburg, John lived a life characterized by service, dedication, and love for his family and community.
John honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, an experience that shaped his strong sense of duty and patriotism. After returning home, he spent 38 years working at the Gould National Battery Plant, where he was known for his hard work and commitment.
A devout member of Thomas Road Baptist Church, John's faith was a central part of his life. He was married twice, first to Ann J. Tayman Powers and later to Patty Sue Watts Reed Powers, both of whom preceded him in death. His resilience and steadfast spirit helped him through these significant losses.
John was the last surviving brother of seven, cherishing the memories of his siblings—Charlie, Roy, Ray, Jack, Ralph, and Ted. The bond he shared with his brothers remained a source of strength throughout his life.
In retirement, John dedicated much of his time to volunteering at the Centra Cardiopulmonary Rehab Center, where his kindness and willingness to help others made a lasting impact.
John was born to Charlie T. Powers and Betty E. Rogers. He is survived by his two sons, Ricky Powers (Judy) of Lynchburg and Danny Powers (Betty) of Forest. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Matthew Powers (Erica), Andrew Powers, Benjamin Powers, and David Powers, as well as great-grandchildren Sean Fields, Reese Worrell, and Riker Powers. John is also remembered by several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the medical professionals at Dr. Craig Petry’s office, Ralph and Laurie of Centra Home Health, Dr. John Plankeel of Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates, and the surgical staff at Lynchburg General Hospital for their compassionate care during John’s final days.
The family will receive friends from 12:00-12:50 on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel where a Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jonathan Falwell officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors provided by American Legion Post #16.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or a charity of your choice in John’s memory.
John will be remembered for his unwavering faith, dedication to his family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
