Abbie Burke Martin

Abbie Burke Martin, 84, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024, in Martinsville, Virginia. She was born on July 12, 1940, in North Carolina, to the late Edward Mendenhalt Burke and Elise Story Burke. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Elise “Tootie” Blair and her beloved husband, James “Jim” Edward Martin. The two were married on June 15, 1969, and were separated in death on December 17, 2020, after Jim passed away due to COVID complications.

Abbie attended Guilford College & Kings Business School where she earned a bachelor’s degree. She worked as an administrative professional for Duke Power and also worked for Appalachian Electric Power Company in Fieldale. Abbie leaves behind her Brother-in-law, William “Bill” Everette Martin and his wife, Martha “Missy” Fields Simpson.

Before his passing, Jim had expressed his wish for a shared memorial service with Abbie. To honor this wish, there will be a joint Memorial Service for Jim and Abbie on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at 2:00 PM, at Fieldale United Methodist Church.
