Allen H. Thurman "Smiley"

Allen Henry Thurman “Smiley”, age 79 of Rocky Mount went home to be with our Lord on the morning of January 12, 2023. He was at peace in his home at the time of passing. He was born May 3, 1943 to Wilford Henry and Lorene Lynch Thurman. Smiley was born at home in Franklin County where he worked and served his entire life, other than the two proud years spent in the Army where he gained E-4 status in a short period of time. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting with family and playing golf with friends, he was a master craftsman spending his entire adult career doing custom building on and around Smith Mountain Lake. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Deanna Dillon Thurman, his son, Matthew Allen Thurman (Jacqueline Ellis Thurman), granddaughters, Madison and  MacKenzie, and his grandson, Jude Allen Thurman. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Surviving brothers are, Douglas Thurman, his wife Phyllis and their children, Jennifer Thurman, Lorie and Kirby Shipman, their children, Dylan and Gauge Shipman, brother, Earl Thurman. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Michael Dillon (Linda), their children, Jonathan Dillon, Haley D. Dossi, children, Chelsea D. Young and Shaner Dillon. Funeral services will be held at Franklin Heights Church, 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2023 with Dr. Stan Parris officiating. Interment will follow in the Thurman Family Cemetery. His family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Saturday at Flora Funeral Service.
