Alma Melinda Clawson Townsend

Alma Melinda Clawson Townsend, 88, of Martinsville, VA passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late Luther Clawson and Mary Trivett Clawson. In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by beloved son, Richard James Townsend; and grandson, Shane Townsend. 

Alma was a retired phlebotomist who spent her career caring for others. She also served as a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Lodge in Martinsville and a faithful member of Stone Memorial Christian Church since 1971, where she enjoyed fellowship, faith, and community. 

She will be remembered for her lively spirit and wonderful sense of humor. Alma loved her family, shopping, traveling, watching basketball and westerns with her husband, and taking joy rides through the mountains where she found peace in the beauty of the mountainside. 

Alma is survived by her devoted husband of 70 years, James Ernest Townsend; her children, Mary Jane McKinney (Earl), Guy Townsend (Carol), and Charles Townsend (Ann); grandchildren, James Townsend (Lucy), Christina Townsend Angeles (Ramon), JP Mathes, Eric Townsend, and Benjamin Townsend (Molly); six great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. 

A memorial service for Mrs. Townsend will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at 2:00 P.M. at Stone Memorial Christian Church (3030 Virginia Ave, Collinsville, VA 24078), with Pastor Tim Wood officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Stone Memorial Christian Church.
