Alvis Doran Carter

Alvis D. Carter, 92, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024. He was born on June 21, 1932, in Franklin County, Virginia, to the late Gerald Wayne Carter and Nora Thompson Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Carter; sister, Sally Foster; and grandson, Cody Grasser.

Alvis, a Korean War Army veteran, also served as a deacon at Gospel Baptist Church. Alongside his farming and beekeeping activities, he had a passion for moonshining in his younger years. He once owned a business where he restored antique furniture and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and pitching horseshoes, earning several trophies in the process. Alvis treasured the time spent with family and friends, often sitting by the wood stove for hours.

Alvis is survived by his wife of 64 years, Linda Foster Carter; three sons, Timothy Carter of Bassett, VA, Darnell Carter (Judy) of Boiling Springs, SC, and Johnnie Carter (Pat) of Bassett, VA; two grandchildren, Kimberly A. Vaughn and Jason S. Vaughn; four great grandchildren, Jaxon Coran, Krsjun Gates, Kenzliegh Vaughn, and Karter Vaughn; three sisters, Juanita Hale of Ferrum, VA, Pansy Cradock, of Roanoke, VA, Joy Carter of Stanleytown, VA; one brother, Mitchell Carter, of Quinton, Virgina; and a host of other family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at The Foster Family Cemetery in Bassett, Virginia, at 11:00 am with Pastor Mark Helms.
