Ammie Hicks Dawson

August 10, 1925 - May 3, 2025

Ammie Hicks Dawson, 99, of Forest, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, May 3, 2025.

Born on August 10, 1925, in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Massie L. Johns and Hallie Mae Hicks Johns.

Ammie was the oldest member of the Monacan Indian Nation, a distinction she held with quiet pride. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission and also found spiritual fellowship in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ammie was a woman of deep faith, resilience, and boundless love for her family. She found joy in gardening and especially in cooking for those she loved—her biscuits were legendary among her family and friends. She also had a passion for travel and was always eager to go wherever her car would take her, whether near or far.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hicks, Sr.; a son, Roy W. Hicks; and five siblings: Aubrey Johns, Wilma King, Noey Johns, Franklin Johns, and James Johns.

She is survived by one son, Herbert Lee Hicks, Jr. (Betty) of Madison Heights; three daughters, Louise Irby (Wayne) of Fort White, FL, Joan Marie Gibbs, and Bertha H. Provenza, both of Forest; five grandchildren, Ross Beverly (Bonnie), Don Haynes (Rachel), Jennifer Gibbs, Chris Dean, and Michele Dean; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and her sister, Annie Maples of Delaware.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission, with the Rev. Kathy Chase and the Rev. Jeannette Pillsbury officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Following the service, the family will host a luncheon at the St. Paul’s Tribal/Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Mission, 2009 Kenmore Rd., Amherst, VA 24521.

Ammie leaves behind a legacy of warmth, strength, and love that will be cherished for generations to come.
