Anne Evans Stewart

July 12, 1928 - January 5, 2025

Anne Evans Stewart, 96, of Amherst,VA, passed away Sunday, January 5, 20, at Fairmont Crossing Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Newington, Georgia, July 12, 1928, she was the daughter of the late David Ellison Evans and Annie Pitts Evans. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Preston Scott, Sr. and her husband of 59 years, Thomas Melville Stewart; three sisters and seven brothers.

She is survived by her son, Preston “Jerry” Scott (Barbara) of Springfield, GA; two daughters, Helen Alicia Raleigh (Harry) of Cincinnati, OH and Martha Ratliff (T. Clark) of Amherst, VA; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great- grandchildren.

Her life spanned from the rural southern Georgia upbringing with marriage and death of her husband Preston, to middle Tennessee with a home for over fifty years in Nashville with her spouse, Tom. Finally she retired to the mountains of Virginia for 20 years, where she had moved for aid before her Cincinnati stay.

Anne’s life was a reflection of her early commitment to Christ. She loved to serve others in her church by teaching children during Vacation Bible School, working in the kitchen, or bringing roses to the sick as she prayed for them. She was faithful to God’s house and people. As a caregiver, she expressed her love by bringing gifts of chicken salad, pimento cheese, lemon bars, and other homemade goodies to those in the community. She is known for her gardening and her dedication to rooting out the weeds in her lawn and flower borders, even as a woman in her early nineties.

She was Southern Belle and tomboy alike with a lasting love of family. Her memory will be cherished by numerous nieces and nephews. With her long life she was able to bestow her smile and care to successive generations. Sisters in Christ became lifelong friends, whether they were her prayer partners or mutual Bible Study Fellowship attendees. The last two years of her life, while living in Cincinnati, she became an honorary member of the Raleigh clan and was nurtured by the love of many great-grandchildren.
