Arlene Hope Plybon
June 11, 1958 - April 3, 2023
Arlene Hope Plybon, 64, of Merrifield, VA passed away peacefully on April 3rd, 2023 in Hardy, VA. Arlene was the daughter of Glynn and Betty (Kirk) Plybon. She was preceded in death by her father, Glynn, and her brother-in-law, Michael Damon. Arlene was born on June 11, 1958 in Roanoke, VA, but she grew up in Falls Church, VA and lived all her life in the Northern Virginia area. Arlene graduated from Falls Church High School, class of 1976. Following graduation, she attended Northern Virginia Community College where she received an Associates Degree in Accounting in 1978. In 1999, Arlene attended the DoD Professional Military Comptroller School. Arlene spent the majority of her career working as a civilian for the Department of Defense, primarily supporting the Navy with a few years working for the Army. Arlene had a sharp mind and was quick with numbers, which is why she naturally found a career as a budget analyst. Towards the end of her career, Arlene worked for the Military District of Washington where she served on a team supporting the restoration of the Pentagon following 9/11. In addition to Arlene’s successful career, she had a large network of close friends and family whom she saw often, and she was the owner of several cats whom she cared for dearly. In her free time, Arlene was an avid fan of the Washington-area sports teams, often attending Capitals and Nationals games, as well as watching the Redskins on T.V. Arlene loved music and concerts, with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and Arlo Guthrie among her favorite artists. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross stitching, and fashion – she was never too far from the mall. Arlene’s life was a testament to strength and perseverance. Although she was challenged by epilepsy throughout her entire life, she never let it hold her back – whether that meant riding a rollercoaster, attending Rolling Thunder in DC or kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland, she always found a way to live her life to the fullest. Arlene is survived by her mother, Betty Plybon; her sister, Wanda Damon; niece, Amanda Damon; nephew, Andrew Damon; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Although her family misses her dearly, they take solace in knowing that she is at peace. The visitation will be held at Flora Funeral Home in Rocky Mount, VA on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 4:00-6:00 PM. A Celebration of Arlene’s life will be held at Snow Creek Christian Church in Snow Creek, VA on Saturday, April 15th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
