Arthur Leo Nickerson
Arthur Leo Nickerson, 74, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 14, 1950, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to the late Avner Smith and Eleanor Marie Whitehouse Nickerson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Heather Ann Nickerson; sister, Wanita Nickerson; and brothers, Wayne and Robert Nickerson.
Arthur honorably served in the United States Coast Guard for seven years. After his service, he spent his life as a carpenter. Arthur was an unwavering family-man, loving father, and a loyal friend. He was a master of all trades: whittling wood, playing the guitar and the harmonica, working with his hands, and so much more. He believed in doing things the right way – through hard work and dedication. He imparted his knowledge of carpentry to his sons, so they would always have a set of skills to support their families. Arthur enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson Sportster, fast cars, and spending quality time with his family and friends. To all who knew him, Athur was an all-around great guy – the kind of man who made those around him feel safe and loved. His advice, “Never say you can’t,” was the way he moved through life, and it will continue to echo in the hearts of those who loved him, especially in trying times. His memory will be cherished forever.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Jo-Ann Rooker Nickerson; children, Shawn Kenneth Rooker (Diana), Keith Allan Nickerson (Mary), Jason Alexander Nickerson (Renee), Craig Avery Nickerson (Jamie), and Mёlinda Allison Nickerson; sisters, Barbara Nickerson, Isabelle Kelley, and Rita West; brothers, Fredrick Nickerson, Carl Nickerson (Kathleen), and William Nickerson (Tonya); grandchildren, Sammatha, Kasidy, Melody, Caleb, Harley, Sophia, Jahmari, Kyle, Izayah, Jaxon, Cole, Liam, and Brynlee; and great-grandchildren, Natonya and Xander.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Mountain Valley Hospice for their care, and to Mary, Jason, Isabelle, and Mёlinda for their support, love, and presence until the very end.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at Central Baptist Church in Axton, Virginia. The family will accept guests from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Pastor Corky Haak will officiate.
