Authur Ray Chappell

Mr. Arthur Ray Chappell, age 85, of Ararat, Virginia, passed away at his residence on Saturday, August 9, 2025. Mr. Chappell was born in Carroll County, on April 20, 1940, to the late Will Chappell and Virginia Flemming Chappell Chandler. He was the owner of Chappell’s 66 for over 14 years and was a member of Ararat Church of the Living God. Ray was a man of unwavering faith and a pillar of the community who loved to farm. Ray will be greatly missed by family and friends. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Josephine Rucker, Lillie and John Middleton, and Bunny Chappell and Jeff King; son, Derrick Franklin Chappell (Regina Waddell), six grandchildren, Jessica Louise Hiatt and Travis Wayne Hiatt, Jolena Jill Chappell Phillips, Erin Gwynn, Jesse Ray Tate and Mariah, Tanner King, and William Forster Middleton; twenty-two great grandchildren; one great great grand child on the way; sisters, Myrtle Coffey, Bessie Roberts, Kathy Philyaw, and Tammy Ogle; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Chappell; and several other family and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chappell was a loving husband to Brenda Joyce Chappell for 56 years; along with his wife, Mr. Chappell is preceded in death by a son, Cecil Ray “Toby” Chappell; daughter, Penny Ray Chappell; grandson, Joseph Chappell; sister, Edith Collins; and by two brothers, Jimmy Chappell and Dick Chappell. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday August 12, 2025, at 10am at Mount Bethel Moravian Church Cemetery with Pastor Joey Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends Monday August 11, 2025, from 6:00 – 8:00pm at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Moody Funeral Service in Mount Airy is serving the Chappell family.
