Ann Lee Alexander Cook

January 10, 1940 - July 21, 2022

Ann Lee Alexander Cook of Rocky Mount, Virginia, died on July 21, 2022, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Judge William A. Alexander and Elizabeth Bennett Alexander.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 52 years, Roderick Shannon Cook; her daughter Elizabeth Shannon Cook Jeans and her husband Robert C. Jeans of Glade Hill; her daughter LeeAnn Alexander Cook and partner Christopher Horn of Rocky Mount; and two loved granddaughters, Rachel Justine Wiley and Elizabeth Ann Alexander Jeans. She is also survived by her brother, Judge William N. Alexander, his wife Sarah Davis Alexander; her brother-in-law Theodore M. Cook, his wife Sara Cook, and many adored nieces and nephews. Ann Lee also leaves behind countless and dearly cherished friends she met through many of her life’s adventures.

Ann Lee graduated from Franklin County High School in 1958 and entered Mary Baldwin College where she began pursuing a career in education. After graduating in 1962, Ann Lee returned to Franklin County as a teacher. Shortly after, Ann Lee decided to attend Radford University where she received her Master’s Degree in Counseling in 1966. Afterward, she moved to the eastern part of Virginia to become a guidance counselor. After a brief time in Richmond, she settled in Yorktown Virginia, in 1968. She retired in 1991 as guidance director from Tabb High School. During her years in education, Ann Lee was known for helping children long before public programs existed. She always enjoyed her career and adored working with her students.

After retirement, Ann Lee returned to her beloved Franklin County, Virginia. She served on Rocky Mount’s Town Council from 2002 to 2006, the Goodwill Industries Board, and the Community Partnership for Revitalization to help create the public gardens throughout the town. She attended Trinity Episcopal Church and was a proud member of The Daughters of the King.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, July 27 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends afterwards in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Carilion Hospice of Franklin County, 390 S. Main Street, Suite 314, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.

The family would like to thank all of the dear friends that have sent prayers and given such support during this difficult time. A special thank-you to Carilion’s Hospice Care nurses Susan and Sabrina. They cared graciously for her and provided guidance to the family during this time.
