Charles Donald Barney

December 1, 1938 - November 17, 2024

Charles “Donald” Barney, 85, of Appomattox passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Helen Marie Barney.
Born on December 1, 1938, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles Mark Barney and Elda Bayer Barney. Donald was a man of Christian faith, served four years in the Air Force, then spent the majority of his working career in the transportation industry. He worked several years as a truck driver for various carriers and then shared his knowledge of the road with many as a truck driving instructor at James Rumsey Technical Institute. He took pride in being involved in his local community, he served in many officer positions with the American Legion and most recently as the 2nd Vice Commander and member of their Honor Guard. He could often be found taking his dogs, first Shadow and then Peanut, for "pet therapy" visits to the residents of Appomattox Rehab & Babcock Manor. During the fall football seasons, you would find him sitting on the 50-yard line cheering on the Appomattox Raiders. Donald never met a stranger, loved sharing stories and helping others.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Jill Diane Unger, Janet Dawn Murphy and husband Rodney, and Julie Denise Fischer and husband, Billy; his bonus daughter, Barbara Wilson and husband, Steven; six grandchildren, Natalee Sanders and husband, Tim, Alesha Cox and husband, Austin, Cameron Unger, Jeremy Mason, II, Garrett Murphy, Tyler Fischer; four great-grandchildren, Dawson Sanders, Jaxon Sanders, Blake Sanders, and Aisla Cox; bonus grandsons, Logan Wilson and Dylan Wilson; sisters-in-law, Cynthia Wilson and husband, Skip, Tamara Burke, and JoAnn Cole; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Sug Unger.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 2pm, Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Post #104 American Legion Hall. In keeping with Don’s love of wearing colorful, mix-matched clothing, we encourage guests to dress in bright colors for the celebration.
