Anne Taylor Miller
Anne Elizabeth Taylor Miller, age 93, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024, in Lynchburg, Virginia. Born on the twentieth of March in 1931, she was the second child of E.P. “Bud” Taylor and Irma Chenault Taylor.
Anne lived her childhood in Gladstone, Virginia where her parents owned the town’s general store. She fondly remembered and told stories about the people of Gladstone; she believed it was her privilege to have grown up there.
When her parents purchased a farm in the Bent Creek area, Anne attended Appomattox High School; she graduated at age sixteen. From there she attended and graduated from Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. During her senior year she met the love of her life, George Russell Miller. He would be her husband for sixty-five years. Married on August 11, 1951, they would find themselves living in California, New York, Tennessee, Minnesota, Washington, and finally retiring above the James River in the Bent Creek area.
Mrs. Miller was a revered teacher for thirty-three years. She also believed in continuing education. After earning a master’s degree from the joint curricula of Western Washington University, Bellingham and University of Washington, Seattle, she attended programs at Vanderbilt University, University of North Carolina, and in Spain, studied at Real Universidad Maria Cristina at El Escorial de San Lorenzo, Universidad Salamanca, and Estudio International Sampere. Highlights of her life in education were the yearlong sabbatical to live and travel through Spain with her husband and the high school student trips she and her husband chaperoned through Mexico and Spain.
Anne was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was blessed with a loving marriage and three children: Deborah Adair, Ashley Taylor Miller and wife Laurie, and Anne Russell Miller and husband Floyd. She had six grandchildren: Kate Reagan Loeb and husband Bryan, Adam Taylor Miller and wife Dachelle, Christopher Taylor Miller and wife Brittany, Nicholas Garrett Miller and wife Mandy, Lucy Taylor Hayes (deceased), and Jackson William Hayes. Her ten Great Grandchildren are: Emerson Ashley Loeb, Dallas Allan Loeb, Decker Reagan Loeb, Finley Grace Miller, Brodie Taylor Miller, Wynne Rae Miller, Eliza Jean Miller, Nolan Taylor Miller, Adaline Russell Miller, and Raleigh Rose Miller.
Anne loved living! While she enjoyed reading, gardening and entertaining, one of her greatest joys was to contribute—to her family, friends and community. In “retirement,” she was a member of Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church, was invited to participate in the Protocol School of Washington, tutored Spanish students, served as an Appomattox poll worker, and belonged to book, gourmet, and garden clubs. She never missed a birthday or a chance to make someone feel better about their day. She held all peoples in the light of respect and charity. Many will remember her as a lady of graciousness and one with a sassy sense of humor.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 11 at 10 am, Maple Grove Baptist Church, James River Road, Gladstone, Virginia. Reverend Gene Beverly will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Anne’s name, please consider Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center or the charity of your choice.
One of Anne’s last requests was to express gratitude to Dr. Andrew Wolfe of University of Virginia, her physician of thirty years, the lovely people at Runk and Pratt, Liberty Ridge, the team from Nayar Health Care & Hospice and all others who stood with her during her last journey through life.
