Hunt Hamilton
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Hunt Patteson Hamilton, 101 years of age, on February 18, 2025. Hunt was born on September 13, 1923, and lived most of his life in Appomattox, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard Alvin Hamilton and Bessie Patteson Hamilton, and his wife of 73 years Pearl Virginia Bryant Hamilton. He also survived the loss of all ten of his siblings Kervin, Kathleen, Rob, Richard, Nellie (Beale), Beth (Grow), John Will, Lloyd, Virginia, and Lorraine (Torrence). He was very close to his parents and siblings and especially his wife.
Surviving family members are sons, David (Jeannie) and Dan (Caroline) and grandsons, Jeff (Kerri) and Adam (Melisa). Returning to Appomattox after WWII Hunt fell in love with Pearl, whom he married in 1948. His deep love and commitment for her, his sons, grandsons and all extended family was always evident. He had a strong religious faith which was felt by all he encountered. He was a member of Herman Church and later Mount Comfort Methodist Church.
Hunt graduated from Appomattox High School and worked on the family farm until joining the army in 1943. He served in North Africa and Italy in WWII. He trained officers on using mortars which resulted in some hearing loss. Following the war, he worked in Washington DC and Richmond.
Hunt was always very social and enjoyed talking with people of all walks of life. He sold life insurance for over 25 years and got to know many people in the community. Later in life he stopped to talk to people greeting him, and he often asked “Now, who are your parents?” And still later he would ask “Who are your grandparents?” He then called the person by name. He retired from the insurance business to continue his passion of raising beef cattle into his eighties.
Hunt believed in supporting community organizations by joining and participating wholeheartedly. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, VFW, American Legion and the Masonic Lodge in Appomattox for over 50 years.
After the death of his wife Pearl in 2022 Hunt had wonderful caretakers in his home. Debra Hughes, and her husband Dale, provided exceptional support and friendship for 3 years. Barbara Hunter and Daisy Green provided faithful nighttime coverage.
We especially want to thank family members and friends and neighbors who visited Hunt and supported him over the past few years. The family also wishes to express thanks to the staff at Elms and Centra Hospice for the care of Hunt.
The funeral service will be on Saturday, February 22 at 2 pm at Robinson Funeral Home at 667 Court St., Appomattox, Virginia with burial following in Old Herman Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
