Charles William Haney

September 13, 1938 - June 25, 2025

Charles William Haney, known as “Chuck,” passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 86.
Chuck Haney was born on September 13, 1938, in Trenton, N.J., and thereafter lived, worked and raised his family in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida and Appomattox, Virginia. He was educated at Trenton Catholic Boy’s High School (1956) and St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia (1960). He worked in public service for most of his career. He was a researcher and project manager for over thirty years at the Naval Air Development Center in Pennsylvania and at U.S. Naval facilities in Florida.
Chuck and Abigail McKenna were married in 1960, and they thereafter raised four children, and later fostered two more. Abigail Haney passed away in 2006. Chuck and Mary Veronica “Ronnie” Hirtz were married in Virginia in 2012 and they formed a personal bond of great affection as well as a united presence in a variety of public and charitable institutions in the Appomattox area.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Joseph Haney and Helen Rose (Maley) Haney, and by his sister Mary Ann (Haney) Scheideler and brother in-law Richard Scheideler.
In addition to his wife, Ronnie Haney, he is survived by six children: Elizabeth McMichael and husband Tim of Seattle, WA; Seamus Haney of Lynchburg, VA; Sean F. Haney and wife Heather of Marietta, GA; Catherine M. Haney and husband Jerry Curtis of Miami, FL; Charlotte Marie Scott and her husband Joe of Kennewick, WA and Grace Ann Clark of Charlottesville, VA; six grandchildren, Logan, Miles, Annabelle, Robert, Tristan and Conner; a brother, Robert Haney, and his wife Gail of Ewing, NJ; and very special friends, George and Ellen Anthonisen of Solebury, PA.
Chuck was descended from four generations of Hopewell NJ farmers (the Haneys) and a large Irish family (the Maleys) on his mother’s side. He particularly enjoyed the Maley sisters’ annual Fourth of July picnic and the company of his cousins and their children. Those cousins and nephews and nieces will remember him fondly. His memory will also be treasured by his in-laws, Chuck and Pat Hirtz of Appomattox VA, his Hirtz sister-in-law and six brothers-in-law as well as the two Hirtz nephews with whom he and Ronnie were particularly close.
It is perhaps obvious to those who knew him, that Chuck Haney’s most memorable and notable characteristics were his love of family and friends, his love of community and fellow man, his love of this country, and his love of life. Less noteworthy, but no less important to those who love him, were his personal characteristics: his great laugh; his dry wit; maybe even, his funny socks. With a lifelong interest in photography, including as a member of the Blue Ridge Photographic Arts Society, Chuck leaves something of a record of his extensive personal and public activities. His exceptional characteristics may have been openly displayed in society, but they also enhanced his ability to participate effectively and amicably in his public undertakings, including his decades of work with charitable organizations and with the government in a variety of positions and agencies. If a cause or group needed assistance, he was likely to be an avid and prominent supporter. Examples of his community activities include: his many years volunteering with and serving on the board of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia; his 16 years of working to maintain the integrity of Appomattox County elections while serving on the Appomattox County Electoral Board; and his founding membership and active volunteer participation in MAC'S Kitchen Food Bank. A man of great faith, Chuck was also an active member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Appomattox, VA and served on its finance board for many years.
He will be missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Peace Church, 2938 Oakleigh Ave., Appomattox, VA 24522 at 10:30 am, Saturday, July 19, 2025, with Father James Gallagher officiating. The family invites friends to visit with them at 9:30 am, prior to the service. A private internment will be held at a later date.
