Yoshie Nagasaki Moyer
Yoshie Moyer (née Nagasaki) of Spout Spring passed away Monday, September 22, 2025, after a brave battle with cancer.
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1947, she was the daughter of the late Shigeyoshi and Kiyoko Maeda Nagasaki and the second of four children. Yoshie earned a college degree and was a teacher in Japan before making the United States her home in the early 1970s. With her husband’s U.S. Army service, they moved often before settling in Florida, where they raised their daughter.
A gifted musician, Yoshie was a trained opera singer and pianist. She was well known for her joyful tradition of singing “Happy Birthday” opera-style to colleagues in her last role before retirement, a kindness that endeared her to many. After her husband’s passing, she found loving companionship with Harold Cheatham and grew close to his daughter, Cathy Weiss, and his sons, Steve and Tim Cheatham.
Later in life, Yoshie moved to Virginia to stay with her daughter and family while undergoing cancer treatment and was warmly welcomed by a generous community of friends, neighbors, and caregivers. She will be remembered as a loving mother, devoted grandmother, cherished wife and companion, and faithful friend. Her kind and generous spirit, warmth, music, and humor will be forever missed.
She is survived by her daughter, Tami McDowell, and son-in-law, Jay; grandchildren, Thomas, Samuel, David, and Cianna; her companion, Harold Cheatham, and his wonderful family; her brothers, Hiroyoshi and Hitoshi Nagasaki; her adored Yorkshire Terrier, Momo; and extended family and friends across the United States and Japan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Moyer, and her sister, Tamie Nagasaki.
A Celebration of Life and reception will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at Memorial Methodist Church in Appomattox, VA.
