Joel Preston Ferguson

June 28, 1947 - October 22, 2025

Joel Preston Ferguson, 78, of Appomattox, Va., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. A lifelong resident of Appomattox, Preston was known for his generosity, easy smile, hard work ethic, and loyal friendship— a man who would truly give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
Born in Appomattox, Va., on June 28, 1947, he was the son of the late Mary Lizzie Morris Ferguson and Evans Roger Ferguson. Preston was a dear friend and neighbor to many in the Vera community. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He was an avid supporter of Appomattox Moose Lodge where he also served as Governor. Preston retired from Limitorque Corporation, Lynchburg, after 30 years of loyal service. After retirement, he spent his days helping others and mowing grass to stay busy. Preston had a deep love for fast cars, Dale Earndhart Sr., collecting antiques, music and dancing, cooking and serving food for many friends he considered family.
He is survived by two children, daughter, Tammy Chandler and Tony, and son, Michael Dwayne Ferguson all of Appomattox; one sister, Nancy F. Almond of Concord; three grandchildren, Brent Franklin, Joshua Franklin and wife, Rachel, and Blake Chandler; four great-grandchildren, Brentlee, Avery, Denver, and Grace; a special companion “Pup”; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lowell Thomas Ferguson, Ralph “Blinkie” Ferguson, Curtis David Ferguson, and Larry Wayne “Country” Ferguson; two sisters, Kathy F. Monroe and Linda F. Gallier; and a very special friend, Eddie “Hoo Hoo” Ferguson, whom Preston missed dearly, but now they can take those rides together eternally.
A memorial service will be held at 2pm, Monday, October 27, 2025, at Robinson Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Jerry Childress. A private burial will be held at a later date at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at his daughter’s home, 622 Woodland Rd, Appomattox, Va.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Babcock Manor caregivers, Centra Hospice of Farmville, and Diane Pickett for their love, care and compassion for Preston during his last days here on earth.
