Gary Lee Roop

May 10, 1952 - November 5, 2019

Gary Lee Roop, 67, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.

He was born in Roanoke, Va. on May 10, 1952 to the late Raymond and Frances Carroll Roop and had been an area resident all his life. He was the owner and operator of Masonry Services for 40 plus years. During the little down time he had, Gary enjoyed doing yardwork, and would occasionally find the time to watch a race or do a little fishing. He certainly enjoyed a good ribeye and a Miller High Life following a hard day’s work! His yearly trip to the beach was almost a necessity, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Betty Ann Roop; a brother, Donnie Roop; sister, Linda Paitsel; brother, Tony Roop, and son, Gary Irby.

He is survived by a son, Wayne Roop; daughters, Chasity Flurnoy and Michelle Shrader, all of Salem; daughter, Katina Maxey of Blacksburg; step-daughter, Teresa Cole of Roanoke; a sister, Bonnie Jenkins of South Boston; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and his special friend and neighbor, Barry Oliver.

The family would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks to the staffs of Lewis Gale Medical Center and Blue Ridge Cancer Care for their loving care at the time it was needed.

Funeral services to honor Gary’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem with Rev. Greg Irby officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, November 7, 2019, as well as one hour prior to the service beginning, at the funeral home.
