William Howard Preston

William Howard Preston, 62, of Martinsville, transitioned from this life on Friday, September 4, 2020 at his home. He was born September 11, 1957 in Rocky Mount, to the late Frank Witcher and Attlean Preston. He worked for Bassett Furniture for more than 20 years until he became disabled. On February 13, 1999, he married the love of his life, Reverend Cornelia Johnson Preston. He was a member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the usher board, male chorus, Men of Honor, Pastor’s Aide, and the Helping Hands Ministry until his health declined. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends, and was always the life of the party.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Witcher, Jacqueline Townes and Linda Ziglar; and two brothers, Ray Preston and Terry Preston.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Preston is survived by a daughter, Yasheena T. Nichols (Kevin); two sons, Charles Hird and Laviano Hird; sister, Martha McNair; three brothers, Mark Preston, Buddy Witcher and Danny Witcher; seven grandchildren, A’maya, Layla, Bryan, Angel, Jeremiah, Alexis, and Shane; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

The Home Going Celebration will be held Saturday, September 12, 2020 at 12:00 Noon at Wright Funeral Service Chapel, with Minister Joe Witcher officiating and Pastor Antonio Logan presiding. Burial will follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery. A floating visitation will be held Friday, September 11, 2020 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. The family will be present from 5:00 to 6:00 PM to receive friends, and at other times at the residence, 487 Chestnut Knob Road, Martinsville. All services will be conducted by the CDC Guidelines.
