Maj. William Trenton Simmerman, USAF Retired

February 22, 1922 - September 22, 2020

Major William Trenton Simmerman, USAF Retired, 98 of Salem, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.
He was born on February 22, 1922, in Groseclose (Smyth County), Va. to the late Herman Otto and Sylva Pickle Simmerman.

William (Bill) faithfully served his country during WWII, the Korean conflict, and Vietnam. As a Squadron Commander and Command Pilot, he flew bombing missions in the South Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church and a 33-degree Mason with the Masonic Lodge.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Cecil Vernon Vines Simmerman, and their infant son; brothers, Robert Thomas, Henry B. Simmerman; and his brother-in-law, Dennis Carter.

Family remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 45 years, Nellie Ruth Carter Simmerman; daughters, Sheryl Simmeman, of Salem and Julie A. Simmerman, of Dallas, TX; son, Robert Simmerman (Anita); stepdaughter, Anita Brown Hines; stepson, Charles Brown (Debbie); six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Viar; sisters-in-law, Mary S. Meredith, Linda West, and Dorothy Carter; brothers-in-law, Powell and Gary Carter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service honoring Bill’s life will be conducted on Thursday, September 24, 2020, at 11:30 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
