Walter Rogers Hairston, Sr.

Walter Rogers Hairston, Sr., 75, of Bassett, went to be his Lord and Savior, Sunday, November 1, 2020 at the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 31, 1945 in Bassett to the late Reverend Belvie Davis Hairston and the late Ethel May Ingram Hairston. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Winfred Hairston, Early Reed Hairston; sisters, Ethel Carleen Hairston, Viola Hairston Wade, Mary Idella Hairston Miller and Lessie Dolly Hairston Via.

He was a member of the True Gospel Holiness Church. Walter attended G.W. Carver High School and received his GED from the service. He was a U. S. Army veteran.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Haley Hughes Hairston of the home; one son, Walter Hairston, Jr. of Bassett; one daughter, Mary Hairston Smith of Bassett; sisters, Lillie Mae (Robert) Hairston, Virginia (Maynard) Easley of Bassett, Grace Ann (Wilson) Taylor of White Plains, New York; one brother, Terry (Laurie) Hairston of White Plains, New York; a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends and family may sign the register book and view Mr. Hairston on Thursday November 5th from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM at Bassett Funeral Service without the family present. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:30 AM - Noon in the Bassett Funeral Service Chapel where a service will follow at Noon. Burial will follow in the Carver Memorial Gardens.

Due to the governor’s requirements for Covid-19, a face covering is required and social distancing is to be observed.
