Daniel Joseph Smith, III

May 5, 1959 - November 10, 2020

Daniel Joseph Smith, III, “Big Dan,” passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center, in Salem.
He was born on May 5, 1959, in Indiana, to the late Daniel Joseph, II, and Pauline Kootz Smith. Anyone who knew Dan knew of the extremely good work ethic he possesed. From laboring long hours on the oil rigs in Texas for a number of years, to moving to Salem and beginning a 22 year commitment to Timber Truss, as their lead truss man, and then to Graham Construction, where he was also was no stranger to long hours. He understood the value of hard work and his life was exemplary of it. During the little downtime he had, Dan enjoyed watching his beloved Redskins play, along with his son, Adam, by his side. He also shared his son’s love for music and having a good time, and you certainly knew were you stood with him, as he was honest and to the point. Adam described his dad best, as a loving father and friend who gave great hugs, and a man known to be proud of his family.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Martha Sue Williams Smith; and his brother, David.

Family remaining to cherish his memory includes his son, Joseph Adam Smith, and fiancé, Annie; daughter, Erin Nicole Clingenpeel, and boyfriend, Corey; sister, Nancy Turner; nephew, Eric Turner; faithful dog, Lola; and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 15, 2020, from 1 until 3 p.m., at John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, in Salem.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be conducted on Sunday, at 3 p.m., following visitation, in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Dan Carawan officiating.
