George Calvin Martin, Sr.

November 3, 1925 - November 23, 2020

George Calvin "Shorty" Martin, Sr., 95 of Moneta, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 23, 2020. He was born on Tuesday, November 3, 1925 in Bedford County, a son of the late George Anderson Martin and Roxie Betty Martin Martin. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy-one years, Helen Zimmerman Martin, his brothers, Jimmy Martin (Faye), Herbert Martin and sister Lois Nycz (Joe) and his granddaughter, Sherry Martin.

Shorty grew up in the depression and knew what it took to survive. He was a truck driver for many years and then continued to work in his later years. No matter what he did he could find humor in almost everything. In the last years of his life he faced many challenges but he continued to fight until God called him home. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served in World War II.

He is survived by his sons, George "G.C." Martin (Connie), Darrell Ray Martin; his daughters, Delores Wheeler (Jerry), Donna Kay Martin; his grandchildren, Lynn Divers, Lisa Martin, Tammy Solari, Andrea Lester, Christopher Wheeler, Tara Bays as well as many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends beginning at 11:30 AM on Friday, November 27, 2020 at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford and a graveside service will follow at 2 PM at the Martin Family Cemetery @ Radford Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating, where he will be reunited with his family. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
