George William Bush, Sr.

December 9, 1930 - December 2, 2020

George W. “Bill” Bush, Sr., 89, of Roanoke, passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, at his residence.
Bill was born on December 9, 1930, son of the late Herman and Virginia Ferguson Bush. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After a faithful 24 years of service, having served in the Army National Guard, USMC, and USMC Reserves, Bill retired. However, his willingness to serve would not stop at that period. In 1993, he became a volunteer with the Virginia Defense Force, where he would remain until 2005. Outside of his military career, Bill earned his living, with his wife by his side for the last 10 years of his career, as a long-haul truck driver with 40 plus years behind the wheel. Together, they covered thousands of miles traveling the country and enjoying its beauty. He was known as a modern-day mountain man, as Bill loved the outdoors. He was strong, extremely independent, and self-reliant. He was loved by everyone who knew him and will be missed.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty M. Bush; daughter, Alice Gordon; son, Willie Bush; and grandson, Wayne Garland.
Family remaining to cherish his memory includes daughter, Peggy Garland; grandchildren, Jerry Rush, Jr., Lucinda Wittkower (Dylan), and Katie Smith (John); great-grandchildren, Ada and Elijah; daughter-in-law, Patsy Bush; sister-in-law, Ethelyn Wheeler (Jim); and nephew, David Wheeler.

In keeping with the wishes of the family, a private graveside service will be conducted at Fairview cemetery, in Roanoke.
The family wishes to thank Julie Becker and Carl White of Summit Springs Shooting Range, for their love, support, and friendship over the years.
