Peggy Joyce Carter

September 8, 1934 - December 9, 2020

Peggy Joyce Carter of Salem, Virginia was called home by the Lord on December 9, 2020. Born in 1934 in Portsmouth, Virginia, she was a 1952 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School. Having worked at Yale Lock, she afterwards excelled in business in the insurance industry for approximately 40 years. Companies worked for included Allstate and Atlantic Mutual Companies, serving 25 years with the latter as their Quality Control Supervisor.

As a member of Fort Lewis Baptist Church in Salem, Peggy served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and participated in various committees.

She enjoyed outdoors, fun, and good food, of which she cooked a good bit. Peggy was an avid Virginia Tech football fan, who traveled to many games, and a regular attender of Salem Avalanche Baseball as well. A good bowler, she was part of a league for many years. Also, at different times in her life she could be found fishing, playing softball, or riding horses. Occasional golfing and frequent trips to the beach with family and friends were among her many activities.

Peggy was the kind of person that everyone was glad to know, because she always endeavored to make a positive difference in the lives that she touched. Whether through a kind word, generosity, or giving of her time and talents, she always sowed love that left others uplifted. Those who knew her well will always remember her in this way.

Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Maxey Carter; mother, Lucy Perdue Carter; and brother, Herbert Carter. She is survived by her sister, Nadine Saul, and brother, Gene Carter. She also leaves behind many nephews, nieces, and cousins that were all very dear to her heart.

The family would like to thank the office of Dr. Chetna Jha, Lewis-Gale Hospital, Kindred Healthcare (formerly Gentiva), and Kindred Hospice. Peggy's niece, Lynn Carter, and great-nephew, Chris Carter, who took care of her at home truly could not have done it without you! Much appreciation to all of the kind staff at Lotz Funeral Home and Sherwood Memorial Park.
