John Jewel Spencer

John Jewel Spencer, 89, of Martinsville, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2020, at SOVAH Health of Martinsville. He was the son of the late John Lewis Spencer and Fannie Mae Penn Spencer.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of New Bethel Christian Church. He loved to read the Bible, plant flowers, tend his garden, and look after his grandchildren.

Mr. Spencer was also preceded in death by a son, Frederick Spencer; sisters, Gladys Palmer, Louise Cheek, and Rosa Spencer; and brothers, Thomas and Ernest Spencer.

Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife, Evonuier C. Spencer; daughter, Freda Spencer; sister, Barbara Ann Hairston; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

A floating visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. There will be a graveside service on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 1:00 PM, at the Craighead Family Cemetery located on Waycross Drive, Fieldale, VA. Friends will also be received at his daughter’s home, at 112 Maple Street, Martinsville, VA 24112.
