David Ray Abbott

February 15, 1937 - January 16, 2021

David Ray Abbott (Papa Dave), 83 of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021. He was born, February 15, 1937 in Bedford, VA, a son of the late Allen R Abbott and Ruth W Abbott. He was also preceded in death by his former wife Donna Abbott.

Surviving are his wife, Suzanne Abbott; son, Brian Abbott; sisters, Patsy Simmons, and Ginny Coleman; 2 nieces; step-children, Debbie Morgan (Melvin), Candace Fulcher (Alan), Traci Hartberger (Jeff), Jerry Williams, Jenny Perdue and Mitch Perdue (Krystal); 6 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; along with a special cousin Pixie, many friends, and a beloved dog “Banjo”.

He was a veteran in the US Army, and a member of Hollins Church of the Nazarene. He retired from Virginia Scrap Iron & Metal Company in 2001, and continued to work in the industry for several years after.
Dave enjoyed spending time with family and friends, riding his motorcycle, NASCAR racing, and watching westerns. He loved life and helping people. If you wish to honor his memory, help someone like he would.

A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery on Friday, January 22nd in Bedford, VA at 2:00 with the Rev Allison Burnette officiating. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, online condolences may be shared with the family at www.updikefuneralhome.com

A celebration of life may be arranged at a later date, friends and family will be notified.
