SSG Walter R. Payne

SSG Walter R. Payne, U.S. Army Retired (Hon), of Lynchburg, passed away on Monday, January 18, 2021. He was born in Lynchburg, VA on June 3, 1943, a son of the late SFC Thomas A. Payne U.S. Army Retired (Hon) and Naomi Mahone Payne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, PVT Thomas M. Payne U.S. Army (Hon) and wife Clara, and SSG Cheatham A. Payne, U.S. Army Retired (Hon). He is survived by his brother, Howard L. Payne; nieces, Rebecca A. Pasmore and husband, Philip Magnussen, SR, Tina Payne and Naomi Kite; several great-nieces and nephews; many brothers-in-arms; and brother of his heart, Curlie Dillard, and wife, Patricia, their children and grandchildren. Walter was a good and caring man, who was a patriot, serving his country and his community. He loved his “big trucks” and could turn an 18-wheeler on a dime. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 in Lynchburg, VA for 18 years and a life time member of the Marine Corps League. He is loved by many and will be missed by all.
