Nathan "K-Bass" Kelly
After a battle fought and a race won, Nathan “K-Bass” Kelly, peacefully transitioned from this life to the next on Sunday, January 24, 2021, with his wife, Sophia and a close family member, Kathy, by his side.
Nate was born on March 30, 1957 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He attended school in Bridgeport until moving to Baltimore, Maryland. He served his country in the United States Army until receiving an honorable discharge in 1984. He was awarded his High School Diploma by the State of Maryland in 1990. Nate went on to pursue higher education at the University of Phoenix, receiving his Associate of Arts Degree in 2013.
In addition to his educational pursuits and service in the United States Army, Nate was most notably known for his love and passion for music. An avid bass guitar player, and music studio guru, Nate touched the lives of everyone who knew him with his musical expertise. He served many churches in the ministry of music and his service spilled out of the church into the larger community. Nate played the bass guitar for many community R&B and soul bands, and was known for his perfectionist attitude towards his craft. Nate was an accomplished musician, and had the privilege to grace platforms with musical greats such as Dorothy Norwood, the Late Bishop Rance Allen, and Fantasia Barrino.
Nate loved interior design and completely transformed his and other residences with his keen eye for artistic detail. He didn’t stop with interior design, but also could be found outside his home gardening and manicuring his lawn. Nate was not just proud of his accomplishments, but was one of the biggest supporters of his familial accomplishments, including but not limited to those of his children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and the love of his life Sophia.
Nate married his best friend, “Mikie” on September 24, 1997. He was always by his wife’s side, even as she fought and won two battles with cancer. When he became ill, she reciprocated the same, and was with him every step of the way. Even in his final moments, Nate showed his love and care for his wife. He refused to let go until she was no longer in the room by herself. Their love was truly a story of commitment “till death do us part”.
Nate was preceded in death by his mother, Cynthia White and a brother, Jimmy Kelly. In addition to his wife, Sophia, Nate leaves to cherish his memory: five daughters, Monique Kelly and Shanay Matthews both of Baltimore, MD; Nneka (Carlos) Dodson and Linda Coley of Martinsville, VA; and LaTonya Coley of Richmond, VA. One sister, Consuella Rheubottom of Baltimore, MD. Eight grandchildren: Nishawn, Carter, Mykah, Jazmyne, Kaila, Damon, Timothy, and Raleigh; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 3:30PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. A floating visitation will be Friday, January 29, 2021 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM.
