Robert witnessed many changes to his world, having served with the U.S. Army in the Field Artillery Unit during World War II. After serving his country in war, he settled in Bassett, VA where he worked as a brick mason until retirement. Robert lived a full life as a wonderful father and grandfather better known as Pa to family. He loved to cook but his real passion was baking cakes and supplying family, friends, and his community with stove-top popcorn. Robert was a farm boy at heart, an avid gardener that especially loved growing tomatoes. Family, friends, and visitors were well supplied with fresh vegetables. Most of all, Pa loved his family and instilled, in his sons, strong values that have served them well.
The family would like to give special thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice and to Special Care Giver: Jennifer Swinney for going above and beyond her duties to care for Robert and his family. The family would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to Martha Bowers for the food, the calls, and the visits every day to check on Robert. You were his sunshine especially on those rainy hard days.
Collins Funeral Home, 30 Riverside Drive, Bassett, VA, will be serving the family. Visitation will be for immediate family only, due to Covid-19. A private graveside service will be held.
The family ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Mountain Valley Hospice 1477 Carrollton Pike Hillsville, VA 24343, phone 276-728-1030. Online condolences may be made at www.collinsmckeestonefuneralhomebassett.com
