Monroe (Jay) Helm

October 27, 1947 - March 27, 2021

Monroe (Jay) Helm 73, of Salem, VA, was peacefully called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Jay was a devoted father and husband and he was a very outgoing person. He loved cooking, fishing and he enjoyed horses. Jay served in the U.S. Army for 8 years, he was a Specialist E5, 101St ABN DIV., FORSCOM. Declarations and Metals include, Sharp Shooter Firearms, National Defense Service. Jay was also a Food Service Specialist and a Head Kitchen Supervisor while serving in the Army. Jay was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and attended the Discovery Sunday School Class which he loved. He worked at Green Hill Meat Packing Co. He owned and operated several businesses including, Jay’s Service Center, Jay’s Saddle and Tack and The Blue Jay Restaurant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Lillian Helm.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan of 47 years; sons, Jason and Eric; sisters, Shelby Bowles, and Cindy Hale and husband, Gary; sister-in-law, Donna Lundy and husband, Randy; aunts, Evelyn Jones, and Ruby Starkey; many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly.

The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 12 Noon on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Salem Baptist Church at 103 N Broad St. Salem, VA. The funeral service will directly follow at 12 Noon with Dr. Heath Rickman, Assistant Pastor Tom Clark and Rev. Ronald King officiating. Burial with Military Funeral Honors will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, VA.
