Robert Linden Branscome, Jr. of Martinsville, Virginia, aged 97, passed from this life on June 5, 2021. Mr. Branscome was born in Henry County, Virginia on December 25, 1923, to Mrs. Annie Laura Davis Branscome and Mr. Robert L. Branscome, Jr. Robert and his older sister Anna were raised by their mother in Horsepasture, Henry County, Virginia. After his graduation from Spencer Penn High School, Robert joined the United States Army. He was in flight school when the Army decided that there was an abundance of pilots, so he and fellow flight trainees were transferred to the infantry where he served as a Forward Observer in an artillery/anti-aircraft battalion. He saw heavy action in France and Germany in early 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star.

After the war, Mr. Branscome became a commercial printing typesetter, first in Martinsville and then in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he lived from 1960 to 1979. He moved back to Martinsville in 1979 and continued working as a typesetter until his retirement. Mr. Branscome also enjoyed listening to and playing traditional bluegrass music and was an accomplished guitarist and mandolin player.

Mr. Brancsome was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Anna Lee Branscome Buntin and brother-in-law Arthur “Frank” Buntin of Charlottesville, and by his beloved niece Mrs. Anne Buntin Smoyer. He is survived by his nephew Mr. Robert Buntin and his wife Kara Buntin, his grand-nephew and grand-niece, Timothy Buntin and Anna Buntin and by nephew-in-law Marc Smoyer. Mr. Branscome is also survived on his father’s side by many Branscome cousins and on his mother’s side by numerous cousins who are the descendants of his late aunt Mrs. Mary Victoria Davis Lee Woody, and late uncles William Harry Davis and Thomas Vance Davis.

A graveside service will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens, 3251 Seminole Trail (US 29 North), Charlottesville, VA 22911 on Monday, June 14, 2021, at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that a donation be made to a veterans’ charity of your choice in memory of Robert Branscome, Jr.
