Edith Newman McCormick

May 20, 1922 - August 10, 2021

Edith Newman McCormick, 99, of Tanglewood Road, Spout Spring, passed from this world to the next on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the devoted wife of the late Russell Bolden McCormick for 66 years. Born in Campbell County, May 20, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Doshie Vaden Unrue and Piercy Callihill Newman.
She was a charter member of Bible Baptist Church. Together, she and Bolden loved teaching, leading, singing, and bringing people together. While building the new church, they did whatever was needed. Mrs. McCormick’s specialty was organizing amazing social events for children and young people.
She worked as a secretary and receptionist at Appomattox Garment Company for 10 years, served as secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary, was a member and president of Spout Spring AARP, and was chairman of Appomattox Red Cross for 10 years.
She always wanted to be a teacher but could not afford college. But she was a teacher almost her whole life in her church and community. She especially loved young people and was thrilled, at the age of 59-69, to be a substitute teacher for one year and Middle School Assistant for 10 years.
Top of all of these was her church, her work with 4H youth before her marriage, and being a teacher of all ages. Her words, “I just love life and people.”
She loved working outdoors with her many flowers and shrubs, helping Bolden with farm work, walking all over her farm, sewing for herself, her daughter, and many others. Quilting with her three sisters was a special joy. Creatively making more than 50 photo and scrapbooks was a special passion.
She is survived by one daughter, Maurine Harrison and husband, Phil; one sister, Ava Ferguson; three grandchildren, Russell Lea Harrison, Zachary Scott Harrison, and Heather Harrison Crill and husband, Brandon; three great-grandchildren, William Lea “Will” Harrison, Elizabeth May “Ellie” Harrison, and Cora Kate Harrison; and 12 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Almond and Julia Edgeworth; three brothers, Terrence Newman, P.C. Newman and John William Newman; as well as two great-grandsons, Jessie Phillip Harrison and Dale Richard Harrison.
A private graveside service with family and friends will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Old Concord Presbyterian Church, Spout Spring, with Rev. Jonathan Watson officiating.
In lieu of flowers please consider memorial donations to Appomattox Rescue Squad, PO Box 57, Appomattox, VA 24522.
