Hazel "Susie" C. Nuckles

Hazel Christian “Susie” Cheatham Nuckles, 87, of Double Bridges Road, Spout Spring, died Thursday, August 12, 2021, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Haywood McKinley Nuckles.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on March 4, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Frances Miles Cheatham and William “Billy” Wingfield Cheatham. She was a member of Reedy Spring Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served in the nursery. Susie was a registered nurse working for many years in Virginia Baptist Pediatrics. She was a caregiver to many in the community during their time of need.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Debra Orr of Appomattox; a step-grandson, Kevin Orr; four brothers, Richard Cheatham, Thacker Cheatham and wife, Marie, H.T. Cheatham and wife, Delores and Ralph Cheatham and wife, Shirley; two sisters, Joyce Sayre and husband, Larry and Peggy Moore and husband, Billy; four sisters-in-law, Dolores Cheatham, Sarah Cheatham, Jackie Schropp, and Juanita Cheatham; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Marshall Cheatham, Roy Cheatham, Robert Cheatham, and James Cheatham; one sister, Jean New; a brother-in-law, Richard New; and a sister-in-law, Frances Cheatham.
The family would like to express their appreciation to all of Susie’s many caretakers, but especially to Ella Mae Godsey, Sarah Moody, Denine Wheeler, Katrina Wheeler, Rose Wheeler, and Christie Pollard.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 16, 2021, at Reedy Spring Baptist Church by Pastor Dan Davis and Pastor John Muth. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday, August 15, from 4 to 6 p.m., and other times at the residence of Joyce and Larry Sayre.
